macOS 27 Golden Gate: What It Means for Parallels Desktop
Every year, WWDC gives us a pretty clear view of where the Mac platform is headed next. This year's announcements felt particularly significant, not just in the volume of changes, but because of what they signal about Apple's long-term direction for macOS and the ecosystem around it.
As someone who spends most of my working life thinking about how Parallels Desktop fits into that picture, I wanted to share what stood out to us, what we're already working on, and where we're paying especially close attention.
Note: the areas I describe here are things we're actively researching and testing. That doesn't mean they're all showing up in the next Parallels Desktop release. We're sharing our thinking as it develops, not making promises.
Siri and Apple Intelligence
Siri AI is coming to macOS 27 in beta later this year, bringing deeper system integration and more context-aware capabilities. We're genuinely excited to get our hands on it and explore what it could mean for Parallels Desktop users.
What's interesting is that some of the Apple Intelligence story is already available today. Parallels Desktop 26 supports Apple Intelligence features for users running Windows 11 virtual machines. In Parallels Desktop's Coherence mode, Writing Tools work directly inside Windows applications. You can use rewrite, proofread, or summarize text in a Windows app just as you would in a native Mac application. It's one of those integrations that feels small until you use it for a few weeks and then wonder how you worked without it.
As Apple Intelligence expands across macOS 27, we'll be watching closely for opportunities to bring more of that value to Parallels Desktop users.
App Intents: tell us how you would use them
Apple is also making App Intents more prominent in macOS 27, creating more opportunities for applications to integrate with Shortcuts and system-level automation.
We've started discussing what meaningful App Intents support might look like for Parallels Desktop. Obvious examples include launching a specific Windows application, starting or pausing a virtual machine, or switching directly into Coherence mode. The bigger question is whether those are actually the automations people want.
Before we spend engineering effort building this, we'd love to hear how you would use it. If you have a Shortcut workflow you rely on every day—or one you've always wished Parallels Desktop could support—jump into the Parallels community forums and let us know. Some of our best product ideas have come directly from customer workflows.
macOS VM provisioning and automation
Apple also expanded the virtualization framework with new tools for automating macOS VM setup. Developers can now programmatically configure user accounts, enable automatic login, and establish SSH access directly from the host system.
Many Parallels Desktop Pro users depend on macOS virtual machines as part of their development workflows, especially when building and testing iOS or macOS applications.
We already provide automation capabilities through our own tooling, but these new native APIs are worth a closer look. In our experience, adopting system-native paths where it makes sense often improves reliability and reduces maintenance work over the long term.
macOS 27 is Apple silicon only
With macOS 27 Golden Gate, Apple completes the transition it began five years ago. macOS 26 Tahoe was the final release to support Intel Macs, and Golden Gate arrives this fall as an Apple-silicon-only operating system.
For Parallels Desktop users still running Intel Macs, nothing changes overnight. Parallels Desktop 26 continues to run on Intel hardware, and we're committed to supporting customers on that platform. Apple has confirmed security updates for Intel-based Macs for another three years, and we'll continue supporting Intel users for as long as we see meaningful adoption in our customer base.
For everyone else, which is now the vast majority of Parallels Desktop users, this transition is already behind you. macOS 27 is simply the next chapter for a platform that keeps getting better year after year.
Rosetta in macOS 27 and beyond
WWDC confirmed what we discussed in our Parallels Desktop 26.3 release announcement: Rosetta will remain available as a general-purpose compatibility tool through macOS 27. After that, Apple plans to retain only a limited subset focused on supporting older gaming titles, while broader Rosetta support disappears in macOS 28.
For Parallels Desktop itself, the impact is relatively straightforward. While the application is overwhelmingly Apple silicon-native today, there are still a small number of mature, time-tested components and libraries that currently rely on Rosetta. We've known this transition was coming for some time, and work is already underway to move away from these dependencies before Rosetta's broader support is retired.
For most Parallels Desktop users, this won't be something you'll notice day to day. It's primarily an engineering effort on our side to ensure the product remains fully aligned with Apple's platform roadmap as macOS continues its transition beyond Rosetta.
USB device passthrough
One of the announcements that immediately caught our attention was Accessory Access, a new API in Apple's Virtualization framework that allows USB devices to be passed from the host Mac into a virtual machine, including hot-plugging support.
Parallels Desktop already supports USB device passthrough through our own implementation, and our customers connect far more than keyboards and flash drives. Over the years we've seen everything from embroidery machines and GPS scanners to label printers and highly specialized industry hardware.
For existing Parallels Desktop users, there should be no change here. Our USB passthrough implementation continues to work independently of Accessory Access, and we expect the devices our customers rely on today to keep working as they do now. As with every major macOS release, our QA team is validating compatibility across a broad range of hardware and documenting any findings in our macOS 27 Golden Gate compatibility knowledge base article.
Accessory Access represents an opportunity to build on a system-native foundation over time, which typically brings benefits for security, compatibility, and long-term stability. While our existing USB implementation continues to serve customers well, the Parallels team is exploring how this new framework could fit into future versions of Parallels Desktop.
Streamlined permissions for enterprise deployments
macOS 27 introduces a new consolidated privacy consent flow. Instead of encountering a series of permission requests over time, users see a single streamlined prompt when launching an application for the first time. For most apps, this is a modest usability improvement. For Parallels Desktop, it could be much more meaningful.
Parallels Desktop requires access to a broad set of system capabilities: cameras and microphones for Teams calls inside Windows VMs, keyboard and mouse routing, shared folder access, networking components, and more. That's the reality of building a virtualization platform designed to make Windows feel like a natural part of the Mac experience.
If this new consolidated consent model works the way it appears to, it could significantly reduce the number of permission prompts users encounter during setup.
That matters even more in enterprise and education environments, where administrators may deploy Parallels Desktop across hundreds or thousands of systems and want the onboarding experience to be as frictionless as possible.

Under the hood: the Hypervisor framework
The Hypervisor framework sits at the core of every Windows and Linux virtual machine running in Parallels Desktop Windows on Apple silicon. Apple introduced several meaningful updates in macOS 27, including enhancements to virtual CPU behavior, broader support for modern OS and processor features, and other performance-related improvements. For virtualization software, changes like these can improve both performance and compatibility by enabling guest operating systems and applications to take advantage of capabilities that were previously unavailable, helping more software run successfully inside a virtual machine.
At first glance, these aren't the kinds of announcements that generate headlines. For virtualization developers, though, they're often the most interesting sessions of the week. We're currently working through the technical details and testing what these changes mean in real-world workloads. As always, the difference between a promising API and a measurable user benefit is something you only discover through engineering work and testing.
Preview macOS 27 without upgrading your Mac

Parallels Desktop lets you download and run a macOS virtual machine directly from the application, and you can upgrade that VM to the macOS 27 beta to test your workflows, check application compatibility, and get familiar with the changes before they arrive on your primary machine.

Building for wherever Apple takes the platform
Looking back at this year's WWDC sessions, what stands out most is how much Apple's virtualization story continues to mature beneath the surface. Some of the announcements were immediately visible. Others were the kind of low-level platform improvements that only become obvious months later when developers start building on top of them.
WWDC '26 was a reminder of why the Apple silicon transition was worth the effort. The platform continues to move quickly, and many of the changes Apple announced this year create new opportunities for virtualization software.
