UTM still makes for more setup and VM management in your hands. On an M-series Mac, UTM can virtualize Arm64 operating systems such as Windows 11 on Arm using Apple's hardware virtualization capabilities. That avoids the much larger performance penalty involved in emulating an operating system built for a different processor architecture.
It can also emulate x86 and x64 systems through QEMU. That makes UTM useful when the goal is not maximum Windows performance but access to an older operating system or another architecture.
Developers can keep disposable Windows or Linux environments away from their main Mac installation. Students can learn how virtual machines work without buying a commercial product. Someone who needs one Windows-only utility a few times a month may decide that a little extra setup is a fair price for free software. UTM also supports useful host-to-guest features through its guest tools, including clipboard sharing, shared directories, dynamic resolution, and Retina display handling.
Where UTM hits its limits
Some UTM problems can be improved with a better VM configuration. Others depend on features of the virtualization platform itself. Knowing which is which can save a lot of troubleshooting.

That picture changed in 2026. UTM 5 beta introduced experimental DirectX 12 graphics acceleration for Windows 11 on macOS. If your Windows workload depends on stable 3D acceleration, that distinction matters. Parallels Desktop 27 supports DirectX graphics up to 11.1 and OpenGL up to 4.3 in supported Windows 11 virtual machines on Apple silicon. Its graphics stack is intended for production use rather than beta testing. That does not mean every Windows game, CAD package, or GPU-heavy application will run. The difference is maturity. UTM now has an experimental route into accelerated Windows graphics. Parallels Desktop has a more established graphics implementation and broader support for applications that depend on it.
Windows installation takes more work in UTM
UTM has a Windows VM wizard, and recent versions can download guest tools automatically. You still need to obtain the appropriate Windows 11 Arm installer, choose the VM resources, set storage, and work through the Windows installation. There is value in that control. If you are learning virtualization or building a VM for a specific test, you may want it.
It is less appealing when your goal is simply to open a Windows application. Parallels Desktop can download Windows 11 on Arm from Microsoft through its installation assistant and configure the VM for your Mac and selected use case. With fewer setup decisions and more of the installation handled automatically, our testing found that users could get to a working Windows desktop up to twice as fast with Parallels Desktop than with UTM.

UTM has Mac integration, but not at the same level
UTM can share clipboard content and folders between macOS and a supported Windows guest when the appropriate SPICE guest tools are installed. It also supports dynamic resolution and Retina-aware display settings.
So, the issue is not that UTM has no integration with macOS. The difference is how far the integration goes. Parallels Desktop can place Windows applications alongside Mac applications through Coherence mode, integrate supported Windows apps into the Dock, handle shared files and clipboard content, and provide a more unified Mac and Windows desktop experience. For someone who spends most of the day inside a Windows VM, these are practical differences rather than cosmetic ones.
Snapshot management is another gap
Snapshots are useful before a risky software installation, a Windows update, a registry change, or a development test. QEMU, which sits underneath UTM, has snapshot capabilities.
UTM does not currently expose full snapshot management through its normal graphical interface. That makes rollback less convenient than it is in Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion, where snapshots are built into the VM workflow. For a disposable testing VM, you may not care. If you regularly experiment with a Windows environment you need to restore, it becomes more important.

Treat these as starting points rather than fixed rules. A browser-and-Office VM has different resource needs from a compiler, database, or engineering application. The Mac matters too. A 16 GB system has much less room for an aggressively configured Windows VM than a Mac with 32 GB or more.
How Parallels Desktop compares
Parallels Desktop takes a different approach to the same problem. Instead of expecting the user to spend much time building and tuning the VM, it handles much of the Windows setup itself. Windows 11 can be downloaded through the installation assistant, and the VM is configured for the Mac rather than starting as a mostly manual project.
Graphics are another clear distinction. Parallels Desktop 27 supports DirectX 11.1 and OpenGL 4.3 for supported Windows 11 virtual machines. UTM 5 has introduced experimental DirectX 12 support, but it is still beta technology with limited game compatibility.
Parallels also goes further with day-to-day Mac integration. Windows applications can sit alongside Mac applications, files can move between the two environments, and the VM behaves less like a separate computer you happen to be viewing from macOS.
There is one qualification worth making: Parallels does not remove the underlying limitations of Windows 11 on Arm. Some x86 and x64 applications still have compatibility problems. Nested virtualization is not available on Apple silicon, and some newer games will not run because of graphics requirements, architecture differences, or anti-cheat systems. Other Mac VM options
UTM and Parallels Desktop are not the only choices. VMware Fusion and VirtualBox can both run Windows 11 Arm on Apple silicon today, while Whisky solves a different kind of Windows-compatibility problem without running Windows itself.
VirtualBox: Oracle VirtualBox is free and open source. Older comparisons often describe VirtualBox on Apple silicon as emulation-only. That is no longer accurate. Choose VMware Fusion when VMware already fits your work
Fusion is a strong free alternative for technical users. DirectX 11 support, snapshots, and VMware's broader virtualization tooling give it advantages over UTM for some workloads. Windows integration on Apple silicon is not as complete as the old Intel version of Fusion, so check the specific feature you need rather than assuming every familiar Fusion capability is available.
Choose VirtualBox when you need a free general-purpose VM
VirtualBox's Apple silicon support has improved considerably. It can now virtualize Windows 11 Arm, making it a legitimate option rather than an Intel-only fallback. Several Arm features are newer or experimental, especially graphics, so it is better suited to users who are comfortable with a more technical setup.
Choose Whisky when you do not actually need Windows
If one Windows application is the whole reason you are considering a VM, check whether it works through Whisky first. Skipping the operating system altogether can be lighter than running a Windows VM. The trade-off is compatibility: Wine-based solutions depend heavily on the individual application.
Choose Parallels Desktop when Windows is part of your regular Mac workflow
Parallels Desktop is aimed at a different point on the spectrum. Someone who opens a Windows VM every few weeks may have little reason to pay for it. The case becomes stronger for graphics-dependent software, Windows business applications, engineering tools such as SOLIDWORKS on Mac, and some Windows games. There is also a support distinction. Moving from UTM to Parallels Desktop
You do not need to uninstall UTM to see whether Parallels Desktop works better for your applications. Both products can remain on the same Mac. That makes it possible to keep an existing UTM VM while setting up a separate Windows installation in Parallels Desktop.
Setting up a new Parallels VM takes fewer steps:
